Remembering The Fallen

The Forward recently published an excellent piece that profiles many of the Jewish servicemembers who have been killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We have mentioned many of these same people on JIG in the past, but the Forward takes a much more in-depth look into each case and even gets some reactions from the family members of those killed. There is an excellent video they put together that profiles two cases in particular.

Read the full article over at The Forward as well as an additional editorial piece here.

Two of the people profiled in the piece have a direct connection to Jews in Green.

  • Maj Stu Wolfer ז״ל had corresponded with us over the years and was always eager to share photos of his adventures while deployed. There are some particularly great ones from Channukah and Purim celebrations in Iraq.
  • LT Steve Zilberman ז״ל was a personal friend of mine. Our families shared many a Shabbat dinner together when we were stationed together in Texas and we looked forward to more time together at our next duty station. He died while I was on my last deployment, not that far from where we were in the Arabian waters. He left this world as a hero and I plan on profiling him here on the site in the near future.

May we all be inspired to deeds of charity and kindness to honor their memory.
