American Presidents and Jews

Great article in the Jewish Ledger contains some interesting tidbits about relationships between American Presidents and American Jews.

Lincoln was also instrumental in having rabbis officially recognized as chaplains in the armed forces. While army chaplains of the Christian faith had been serving in the armed forces of the U.S. as far back as the revolutionary war, it was not until the civil war that sufficient influence was brought to bear to grant Jewish chaplains the right to serve. In 1962 changes to the chaplaincy law allowing Jewish clergy to serve was submitted by Lincoln to Congress and passed. Upon the recommendation of the board of ministers of the Hebrew Congregation of Philadelphia, Lincoln then appointed the Reverend Jacob Frankel of Rodeph Shalom Congregation to serve as the first Jewish military chaplain.

Lincoln’s also revoked General Ulysses S. Grant’s Order N. 11, issued on Dec. 17, 1862, which read: “The Jews, as a class, violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department and also departmental orders, are hereby expelled from the department (of the Tennessee) within twenty-four hours.” With Tennessee Jews falsely accused of bribing officers to allow them to smuggle cotton, a scarce commodity, from the South to the North, Jewish businessmen strongly protested Grant’s order.

Herbert Hoover appointed Louis Brandeis to the Supreme Court. At the time,Benjamin Cardozo, the first Jew on the Supreme Court was still sitting and one of Hoover’s advisors asked if two Jews on the Court was a good thing-Hoover replied with words to the effect that wasn’t it a great country where two members of a tiny mnority could sit on the highest court.

Interestingly, twice the number of Jews have received the Medal of Honor as have sat on the Supreme Court, but I suspect few Jews who consider themselves educated know that.

That incident involving Grant was the only time in his life that he displayed anything that could be called anti-Semitism.

The “great”FDR once remarked that the US was a Protestant country and that Catholics and Jews were only here on “sufferance”.Nice.

  • What a bunch of BS, any religion is welcome to serve in the military of the united states of america, we are the world in one country. To say the jew is unwelcome is a lie and a copout. During my 4 years of active duty from 61 through 65 I don’t recall ever serving with any jews. they all filed religious deferment forms and rabbi’s signed off on them, they were contemplating becoming rabbi’s until the age of 35. It is however interesting to note they have a larger standing military than the usa in israel, where all are on active duty or reserves between 18 and 55, Apparantly they need a strong military, what with all the new settlements in other countries land, People just don’t walk over a cliff when lsrael takes the land from their neighbors. They may build fences around some, like GAZA, but these people are human, If the world won’t protect them, the will fight back with whatever they can get their hands on, like any normal person. Israel may need an even bigger and better armed military than they have, if they don’t live up to the commitments they have made to the United Nations and the Numerous promises they have made with their spin the bottle prime minister game, and the newsmedia control and the lobby groups like AIPAC, and their unpublished control of the world class mafia, who interact with the whole world selling whatever military secrets and equipment they can steal from the usa, what with their puppets put into elected positions if they go along with their plans, if not the newspapers and the evening new ruin their political careers. I sense a change in the upcoming time, when the children of the world armed with one book, join in the search for real truth and leave the criminality behind

  • they are a gang of commercial criminals who the world will eventually stop, but the destroyed lives at their hands shame our countries support of such peoples, they are a confused and distrusting people, without respect and common descency for their neighbors, they scheme , lie, cheat and steal, untill the quality of life around them descends to unparalled lows

  • No one would be any different than anyone else if they had lived each others lives. To pretend you are superior and prejudge others and disrespect their human rights always leads to bad ending for all concerned. Thank God for the One Book, where all the children can go to discover truth and will join in a common effort to that end. I believe Artificial intelligence is divine intervention, nonewithstanding the thousands of engineering lifetimes to acheive the material and math development to learn to use the materials o this good earth to accomplosh a tool that could be considered by some to be the real messiah, In christianity christ spoke of the spirit of truth who would bring us unto all things.

  • Jackie Cox,

Your racism isn’t excused by the doctrine you cite. Please take your rambling nonsense and be elsewhere, perhaps speaking with the grubs and worms that occupy the spot under the same rock. I understand they are good listeners.

  • 0bama isn’t Jewish and certainly has no special affinity with Israel Quite the opposite. He has sided with their enemies on every occasion. They may have already reached a similar analogy without any help from anyone..
