Jewish Vets Remembered at Mt. Herzl

A little over a month ago, an unusual unveiling ceremony took place at Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl Military Cemetery. At the ceremony, tombstones of five soldiers from the Givati Brigade were dedicated. The five soldiers had fallen fifty seven years ago during the bitter battles for Latrun in Israel’s Independence War. Two of the five were American volunteers who had served in the armed forces of the United States during the Second World War. Mandel Red Math was an army veteran who fought in Europe. His sister and her family participated in the ceremony. Jerome Jerry Kaplan of Bayonne, NJ, had served as a pharmacists mate in the US Navy. The IDF was unable to contact members of his family.
