Another Fallen Soldier

Private First Class Steven F. Shapiro, a 29-year-old soldier from the small Lake County town of Hidden Valley died in Talil, Iraq this past week on October 21.

Private First Class Steven F. Shapiro, 29 entered active-duty service in March 2010 as an M1 Armor Crewman. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, since July 2010.

Shapiro’s awards and decorations include an Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.

The Army’s official statement said PFC Shapiro died of non-combat related injuries and that the death was under investigation.

May his memory be for a blessing and may his loved ones be comforted during this difficult time.

    I had the opportunity and privilege to spend Pesach with Steven in VBC. (The photo above was taken at the Second Seder.) He sad only recently discovered his Jewishness and was very eager to learn. We spent a great deal of that week in conversation about Yiddishkeit and general Jewish life. I was bewildered when I heard of his untimely passing just 3 weeks before he was scheduled to redeploy. It was truly an honor to know him and I will miss him.
